Finding your first job can be a pretty daunting process. But that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be a fun one, especially if you are applying for something that you like. If you enjoy cooking or just food, in general, there are a lot of restaurants that are hiring. If you prefer fashion then maybe a retail store would be more to your liking. Those are just two of the many examples of ways you can earn money when you’re 15 or 16 years old.
For the parents out there, you should know that studies have shown teens who work 15 hours a week have improved grades. But they also learn about life and get their first taste of independence which is a great plus, indeed!
Teenage Working Requirements
Generally, finding a job at 16 is not as hard as finding work at 14, but there are still some things to keep in mind. Most important of all, asking your parents — it’s a requirement by the state and we can’t simply forget about the state. But once you sort that out, which shouldn’t take long at all, you can go and find the perfect job.
Generally, since you are still in school you will only be allowed to work 3 hours on a school day and 8 on the weekends. Depending on what you are looking for and the job you find, you might not work on the weekends at all, which means more free time to focus on your studies. But If you prefer to make more money instead, a good idea would be to wait until summer.
Finding a summer job can be a fun and exciting opportunity. Since you are on break it’s considered a non-school day, so you won’t be restricted to 3 hours.
But you also don’t have to work 8 hours as there are jobs, although very few, that offer 6 and even 5-hour positions. This is especially exciting if you manage to score a job at some ocean resort. Then you are basically working and on vacation at the same time. I mean come on, you get free food, free housing, and even free transportation if needed.
That sounds pretty exciting for a first job, right?
That’s all well and good, but how does one find a job in the first place? Well, the simplest way is to ask your parents. Even if they can’t find you a job they can ask around, talk to your neighbors, their friends, even teachers or counselors. Something is bound to come out.
The other way and the one I, personally, prefer is to find a job yourself. You are a lot more independent that way and you can find something that you really enjoy doing. Simply search the Internet for open positions, Sites like Indeed and Glassdoor were made for this specific purpose.
You could also try LinkedIn which is basically Facebook for business people. Or you can just scroll down a bit and see the options we listed in this article.
